Hard Drive Wiping UK: Certified HDD Data Erasure

Permanent, verified erasure of desktop, laptop and enterprise hard drives, with free UK collection or on-site wiping and a data erasure certificate for every job.

Hard Drive Wiping Services in the UK

Hard disk drives (HDDs) store data magnetically on spinning platters, and they hold that data long after a computer is switched off or decommissioned. Our hard drive wiping service permanently erases every addressable area of each drive, verifies the result and records it against the drive's serial number, so the drive can be reused, resold or recycled without exposing what it once held.

We wipe desktop, laptop and enterprise hard drives from every major brand, one at a time or in thousands. See the full list on our what we wipe page.

Why Deleting or Formatting a Hard Drive Is Not Enough

Deleting files or running a quick format leaves the underlying data on the platters, where recovery software can often retrieve it. Hard drives also hold data in places users never see, such as reallocated sectors and hidden areas. Secure erasure addresses these as well as the visible disk. For a plain-English explanation, read what data wiping is.

How We Wipe Hard Drives

Verified overwrite

Every addressable sector is overwritten. On modern drives a single verified pass is considered effective.

Hidden areas covered

Erasure includes reachable hidden and reallocated areas where the drive supports it.

Verification and report

The drive is checked after wiping and the result is logged against its serial number.

This aligns with the Clear and Purge principles in NIST 800-88. Multiple passes, as in the old DoD method, add time without meaningful extra protection on modern drives.

Most organisations wipe what they can and destroy the rest.

Collection, On-Site and Off-Site Options

You choose where the wiping happens. We offer free secure collection anywhere in the UK, with equipment tracked from pickup to completion, and wipe it at our facility. If your hard drives cannot leave your site, our on-site data wiping service means the data never leaves your premises, and you can witness the process. For large clearances see our bulk data wiping service.

Proof of Erasure

Every job ends with a data erasure certificate and a detailed report. Records are kept per device, including serial numbers, the erasure method, date and result, so you have audit-ready evidence for your asset register, your clients and your regulator. See how this supports GDPR accountability in our compliance guide.

If a Device Cannot Be Wiped

Faulty, damaged or unresponsive devices cannot be wiped reliably. These go through certified data destruction, and you receive proof of destruction, so the data is protected either way.

Our Process in 4 Steps

  1. Send details. A list or photo of the equipment is enough.
  2. Free quote. A clear, fixed quote within 24 hours.
  3. Collect and wipe. Free secure collection, or wiping on your site.
  4. Certificate and report. Verified results and proof for your records.

We provide this service to NHS trusts, councils, schools and universities, IT companies, private businesses and corporate offices across the UK, from a single device to thousands.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on this topic. Still unsure? Send us the details and we will take a look.

Ask Us a Question
How do you wipe a hard drive?
We overwrite every addressable area of the drive, verify the result and record it against the serial number, then issue a certificate.
Is one overwrite pass enough?
On modern hard drives a single verified pass is considered effective. Multi-pass methods are largely legacy.
Can data be recovered after wiping?
When a drive has been wiped correctly and the result verified, recovery is not practical.
Do you wipe enterprise SAS drives?
Yes, including drives from servers and storage arrays. See also our server and RAID wiping service.
What about drives that fail?
They go through certified data destruction, with proof of destruction provided.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. Every job includes a data erasure certificate and report with serial numbers.
Can you wipe hard drives on-site?
Yes. Our on-site service means drives never leave your premises.
