Secure Data Wiping Questions, Answered

Whether you are clearing a single laptop or decommissioning a data centre, the same questions come up: is deleting enough, what proof will I get, does it meet GDPR, and how does collection work? The answers below cover the essentials. For more depth, read our guides on what is data wiping, NIST 800-88 and GDPR and data erasure.

Every answer reflects how we work in the UK: verified erasure, a certificate for every job, free secure collection and certified destruction for drives that cannot be wiped.

Data wiping basics

What is secure data wiping?
Secure data wiping, or data erasure, permanently removes data from a drive so it cannot be recovered. It is different from deleting or formatting. Read more in our guide to what is data wiping.
Why can't I just delete my files or format the drive?
Deleting and quick formatting usually leave the underlying data on the drive, where recovery tools can often retrieve it. Only wiping or destruction removes it reliably.
Can wiped data ever be recovered?
When a drive is wiped with a suitable method and the result is verified, recovery is not practical. Verification and the certificate are what give you confidence.
What is the difference between data wiping and data destruction?
Wiping erases the data and leaves the drive usable. Destruction physically shreds the drive. We use wiping where possible and data destruction where it is not.

Standards and compliance

Do you follow NIST 800-88?
Our process follows NIST 800-88 principles: a method suited to each device, verified results and a record per serial number. See our guide to NIST 800-88.
Does your service support GDPR compliance?
Yes. Verified erasure, a certificate and chain-of-custody records help you demonstrate compliance. See GDPR and data erasure.
Are multiple overwrite passes necessary?
No. For modern drives a single verified pass is considered effective. Multi-pass methods are largely legacy.
Can you work with NHS trusts, councils and schools?
Yes. We regularly support NHS organisations, councils and schools and universities, as well as private businesses.

Devices we wipe

What devices can you wipe?
HDDs, SSDs, enterprise drives, server wiping, laptop wiping and desktops, mobiles and tablets, plus storage arrays and networking equipment holding data. See what we wipe.
Can you wipe SSDs and NVMe drives?
Yes, using flash-aware methods such as firmware sanitize commands or cryptographic erase. See our SSD wiping page.
What about servers and RAID arrays?
Yes. We handle single servers through to full rack clearances, including RAID and enterprise drives, with secure chain of custody.
What if a drive is faulty or won't power on?
A drive that cannot be accessed cannot be wiped. We offer certified data destruction and give you proof of destruction.

Process, collection and certificates

How does the process work?
Send us your details, receive a fixed quote within 24 hours, we collect or attend site and wipe, and you receive your certificate. See how it works.
Can you wipe on my premises?
Yes. Our on-site data wiping service means equipment never leaves your site. We can also collect and wipe at our facility.
Do you collect from anywhere in the UK?
Yes, we offer free secure collection across the UK, including bulk pickups.
What does the data erasure certificate include?
Each data erasure certificate records device details and serial numbers, the erasure method, date and result, giving you an audit trail.
What happens to equipment after wiping?
Reusable equipment can be returned, refurbished or remarketed where appropriate. End-of-life equipment is recycled responsibly in line with environmental rules.

Quotes and working with us

How much does data wiping cost?
Quotes are fixed and based on volume, equipment type and whether you need on-site or off-site service. Send us your list and we will quote within 24 hours.
Do you only work with large organisations?
No. We wipe a single device or thousands, for organisations of every size.
How do I get started?
