Free Data Wiping Software: What Works, What Doesn't and When to Pay

An honest guide to free disk wiping tools such as nwipe, ShredOS and DBAN, the built-in Windows commands, and why SSDs and compliance need more.

Free Data Wiping Software: What You Get

Free tools can be a perfectly reasonable way to clear a personal hard drive. They are a risky basis for an organisation's compliance, because most give no independent proof, limited verification and uneven support for SSDs. This page explains the main options and where each one falls short.

Free Tools Compared

nwipe / ShredOSOpen-source successor to DBAN, run from bootable USBOverwriting hard drives on most hardwareFor SSDs the project itself advises combining it with vendor secure-erase or NVMe sanitize tools and validating the result
DBANClassic bootable wiper, now supplied by Blancco for personal useOlder hard-drive wipesHDD only, not for SSDs, and no certifiable proof of erasure
KillDisk FreeLimited edition of a commercial toolTrying the workflowReported to be limited to a single-pass zero fill with fewer features
Windows diskpart clean allBuilt-in command that writes zeros to every sector of the selected diskA simple full-disk wipe of a working hard driveIrreversible, easy to select the wrong disk, no report, and not a reliable answer for SSDs
Windows cipher /wBuilt-in command that overwrites free spaceCleaning up deleted files on a drive you are keepingIt does not erase existing files or the whole disk
macOS and Linux utilitiesDisk Utility, Erase All Content and Settings, shred, nvme and hdparm toolsReset or advanced technician useResults depend on drive type and encryption, and need care and checking

The SSD Problem

Most free tools were designed for spinning disks. SSDs use wear levelling and hidden spare capacity, so a straightforward overwrite may miss data. Reliable SSD erasure normally means firmware-level commands (sanitize or secure erase) or cryptographic erase. Read more in our SSD wiping guide and in NIST 800-88.

What Free Tools Rarely Give You

  • Independently assessed products and certifications
  • Verified, tamper-resistant reports per device
  • Support for hidden drive areas and SSD firmware commands across every model
  • Central reporting and audit trails for many devices
  • Help when something goes wrong

Before You Wipe Anything

  • Back up what you need, because erasure is permanent
  • Disconnect drives you do not want to wipe, and double-check the target
  • Test on a spare drive first if you can
  • Confirm the result and keep a record of what you did
  • Destroy drives that fail or cannot be erased

Prefer Not to Run the Software Yourself?

Buying, licensing and operating erasure software makes sense for teams that wipe equipment regularly. If you only have occasional clearances, or want a ready-made audit trail, it is often simpler to hand the job over. We provide hard drive wiping, SSD wiping, laptop and PC wiping, server and RAID wiping and mobile and tablet wiping, with free secure collection, on-site data wiping where equipment cannot leave your site, and a data erasure certificate for every job.

Paid Alternatives

If you need proof and scale, look at Blancco, BitRaser or KillDisk, or read our full data wiping software guide.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on this topic. Still unsure? Send us the details and we will take a look.

Ask Us a Question
Is there free data wiping software that really works?
For hard drives, tools like nwipe and ShredOS work well when used carefully. For SSDs, free tools usually need to be combined with vendor secure-erase or sanitize commands.
Is DBAN still good?
DBAN is aimed at personal use on hard drives only and gives no certifiable proof. nwipe and ShredOS are its maintained successors.
Does a free tool give me a certificate?
Some tools produce basic reports, but they are not independently assessed. For audits, a certified process is stronger.
Can I wipe an SSD with free software?
Overwriting is unreliable on SSDs. Use firmware sanitize, secure erase or cryptographic erase, and validate the result.
Does deleting files or formatting wipe a drive?
No. Both usually leave the data recoverable. See our guide to what data wiping is.
Is free software enough for GDPR?
For personal drives, perhaps. For organisations, you need verified results and records per device, which free tools rarely provide.
Can you wipe my drives instead?
Yes. We offer certified UK wiping with free collection and a certificate for every job.
