Free Data Wiping Software: What Works, What Doesn't and When to Pay
An honest guide to free disk wiping tools such as nwipe, ShredOS and DBAN, the built-in Windows commands, and why SSDs and compliance need more.
Free Data Wiping Software: What You Get
Free tools can be a perfectly reasonable way to clear a personal hard drive. They are a risky basis for an organisation's compliance, because most give no independent proof, limited verification and uneven support for SSDs. This page explains the main options and where each one falls short.
This page is an independent overview. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any tool named here, and product names are trademarks of their owners. Free Tools Compared
| Tool | What it is | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| nwipe / ShredOS | Open-source successor to DBAN, run from bootable USB | Overwriting hard drives on most hardware | For SSDs the project itself advises combining it with vendor secure-erase or NVMe sanitize tools and validating the result |
| DBAN | Classic bootable wiper, now supplied by Blancco for personal use | Older hard-drive wipes | HDD only, not for SSDs, and no certifiable proof of erasure |
| KillDisk Free | Limited edition of a commercial tool | Trying the workflow | Reported to be limited to a single-pass zero fill with fewer features |
Windows diskpart clean all | Built-in command that writes zeros to every sector of the selected disk | A simple full-disk wipe of a working hard drive | Irreversible, easy to select the wrong disk, no report, and not a reliable answer for SSDs |
Windows cipher /w | Built-in command that overwrites free space | Cleaning up deleted files on a drive you are keeping | It does not erase existing files or the whole disk |
| macOS and Linux utilities | Disk Utility, Erase All Content and Settings, shred, nvme and hdparm tools | Reset or advanced technician use | Results depend on drive type and encryption, and need care and checking |
The SSD Problem
Most free tools were designed for spinning disks. SSDs use wear levelling and hidden spare capacity, so a straightforward overwrite may miss data. Reliable SSD erasure normally means firmware-level commands (sanitize or secure erase) or cryptographic erase. Read more in our SSD wiping guide and in NIST 800-88.
What Free Tools Rarely Give You
- Independently assessed products and certifications
- Verified, tamper-resistant reports per device
- Support for hidden drive areas and SSD firmware commands across every model
- Central reporting and audit trails for many devices
- Help when something goes wrong
When Free Is Fine, and When It Is Not
| Situation | Free tools | Professional service |
|---|---|---|
| Your own old hard drive | Usually fine, with care | Optional |
| Drives with personal or customer data | Risky without proof | Recommended |
| SSDs and NVMe drives | Needs vendor commands and validation | Recommended |
| Servers, RAID, fleets | Not practical | Recommended |
| Audits, tenders and GDPR evidence | Weak | Certificate and serial-level report |
Before You Wipe Anything
- Back up what you need, because erasure is permanent
- Disconnect drives you do not want to wipe, and double-check the target
- Test on a spare drive first if you can
- Confirm the result and keep a record of what you did
- Destroy drives that fail or cannot be erased
Prefer Not to Run the Software Yourself?
Buying, licensing and operating erasure software makes sense for teams that wipe equipment regularly. If you only have occasional clearances, or want a ready-made audit trail, it is often simpler to hand the job over. We provide hard drive wiping, SSD wiping, laptop and PC wiping, server and RAID wiping and mobile and tablet wiping, with free secure collection, on-site data wiping where equipment cannot leave your site, and a data erasure certificate for every job.
Paid Alternatives
